The Peoria-produced Komatsu mining truck has taken home the title of “Coolest Thing Made in Illinois” after participating in the 2024 “Makers Madness.” The Illinois Manufacturers’ Association hosted the contest, which drew over 200 entries.

During a ceremony on April 10, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker bestowed the title of “The Coolest Thing Made in Illinois” to the mining truck. Last year, the title was awarded to the Rosenberg Moon Habitat, which was made in Rockford.

“Congratulations to the team of Komatsu and to all the contestants for your exceptional work in continuing to elevate our state’s manufacturing industry,” Pritzker said.

Illinois Manufacturers’ Association CEO and President Mark Denzler also offered congratulations and noted:

“This magnificent construction and mining vehicle is a shining example of the innovation and creativity that drives the manufacturing sector, where big ideas become products that can change the world.”

The truck – built for mining and construction – can carry up to 400 tons. According to an April 10 news release, the vehicle also “has a reduced carbon footprint.”

“Komatsu is honored to receive this incredible recognition, which is a testament to the talent and skill of our team, who are the best in the business,” said Dan Funcannon, Komatsu’s vice president of North America Engineering and Development. “We are proud of our contributions to Illinois’ strong legacy of manufacturing, where human ingenuity transforms raw materials into modern marvels.”
